  • One-Year Group Psychoanalysis Program

Welcome To The One-Year Group Program — the newest in CMPS’ One-Year programs. Although all groups are different, there are similarities among them. Groups can provoke strong feelings that may be expressed or unexpressed. Learning how to identify your feelings in the moment and use them constructively is a skill that can be acquired through the careful study of small group process. Participants are introduced to an experience grounded in the theories and techniques of modern group psychoanalysis that will enhance their ability to lead a group. We will study the motivating and driving forces in group process. Learning is both didactic and experiential.

    COURSEWORK

    Fall 2013 Semester

Beginning Group Process — Tuesdays: 4:00-5:30PM

We will consider the formation and management of the analytic group focusing on the selection of group members and establishing a contract. Participants pay particular attention to the use of induced feelings to address treatment-destructive dynamics.

    The Group Experience I — Thursdays: 5:30-7:00PM

This class will focus primarily on experiential learning. We will explore the dynamics involved in the roles of group leadership and group membership. In particular, we will focus on aspects of working with transference and resistance with the goal of developing a cohesive working group.

    Spring 2014 Semester

Countertransference in Groups — Tuesdays: 4:00-5:30PM

We will examine the distinction among narcissistic, subjective, objective, and anaclitic countertransference, and their use in working with the group and individual group members.

The Group Experience II — Thursdays: 5:30-7:00PM

We will examine group resistances and individual resistances that arise in any ongoing group. In addition, we will consider the effects on the group of a new member entering the group or a member leaving.
