The CMPS Distance Learning Two-Year Program is designed to enrich the work of clinical practitioners and professionals in various disciplines by introducing them to modern psychoanalytic principles, theories, and techniques. In this course of study you can expect to enhance your therapeutic skills, generate new insights about yourself and your work, and develop more effective ways of interacting with your clientele. Non-practitioners who would like to learn more about psychoanalysis are also welcome. Classes utilize case material to illustrate theory. Both experiential process and more traditional teaching methods are used to promote learning.
Fall 2021: Countertransference
This course traces the concept of countertransference as it has evolved from Freud’s views of it as a hindrance to treatment, through the radical rethinking of it in the mid-20th century as a useful tool for understanding the patient, to the current view of its being the primary tool at the analyst’s disposal to effectuate therapeutic change. Special emphasis will be given to the use of countertransference in the treatment of patients with borderline pathology, especially the hateful and aggressive feelings induced by such patients. Projective identification will be examined as a curative factor.
Tuition per semester: $500
