The One-Year Program in Modern Psychoanalysis offers a solid foundation in modern psychoanalytic theory and technique.  The four component courses are designed to be useful to practitioners and non-practitioners alike.  An introduction to psychological development, both healthy and distorted, imparts an understanding of the rationale for psychoanalytic treatment.  Key aspects of the treatment process, including transference, resistance, countertransference, and analytic listening, are studied from the perspectives of patient and practitioner.  Participants gain a sense of themselves as therapeutic agents and begin to develop skills applicable in both clinical and other life situations.  Classes are taught in a supportive, discussion-oriented format.  Continuing education credits are offered to psychoanalysts, psychologists, and social workers.

*TIME CHANGE: CLASSES MEET FOR 10 MONDAYS AT CMPS from 5:30 - 8:40 PM (two 90-minute classes and a 10-minute break).

Fall 2024 Semester: Begins Monday, September 9, and ends November18 (class does not meet September 30)

Spring 2025 Semester: TBD

Tuition per semester: $1000. CMPS faculty teach all courses.

Participants are invited to CMPS events where they can meet certificate program students and faculty members for an informal exchange of ideas.

Fall Semester

THE MATURATION PROCESS

• Recognizing the role of emotions, the body, cognition, and environment in early chidhood development
• Differentiating the self from the other in clinical settings and in everyday life
• Understanding the significance of fixations and regressions in the psychosexual stages

TRANSFERENCE AND RESISTANCE

• Understanding the function of resistance
• Using observation for making inferences and interventions
• Recognizing transference & its implications

Spring Semester

COUNTERTRANSFERENCE

• Recognizing countertransference and using induced feelings
• Distinguishing between subjective and objective countertransference
• Resolving countertransference resistances

ANALYTIC LISTENING

• Listening to the unconscious level of verbal and nonverbal communications
• Understanding symbolic communication, dreams, slips of the tongue, etc.
