Clinicians understand that countertransference reactions to patients can give rise to an array of feelings. These can range from admiration, delight, and joy to the darker experiences of terror, dread, or numbness that can forestall treatment. We can become paralyzed with crippling anxiety when working with some cases or overly invested in treatment outcomes with others. Freud described countertransference feelings as hindrances to be overcome by the analyst, whereas most clinicians today utilize them as valuable tools for understanding their patients. When used as data, countertransference feelings can lead us to correct diagnoses and appropriate clinical interventions.
This weekend seminar will examine the theory and utilization of countertransference feelings in treatment. A variety of case examples will be presented and explored. This will be an interactive learning experience combining theory with process experiences of the group.
Presenters: Faye Newsome, David Rosenthal , Richard Sacks, William Sharp
Preregistration is required, as enrollment will be capped to allow for meaningful interaction.
