In this three-part seminar we will read some of Bion’s texts closely to elucidate his thinking about working with unrepresentable emotional experience often related to psychotic functioning. At the center of our work will be the paper "Language and the Schizophrenic," supplemented by excerpts from other works. Our focus will be on the so-called psychotic functioning present in all our psychoanalytic patients, regardless of their diagnoses. We will highlight Bion's emphasis on the analyst's emotional experience in the countertransference as the main tool for accessing these unrepresented realms of the mind.
Avner Bergstein is a training and supervising psychoanalyst and faculty member of the Israel Psychoanalytic Society. He works in private practice with adults, adolescents, and children and has worked for several years at a kindergarten for children with autism. He has authored numerous papers and book chapters elaborating on the clinical implications of the writings of Bion and Meltzer, and his papers are translated into many languages. He is author of the book Bion and Meltzer's Expeditions into Unmapped Mental Life: Beyond the Spectrum in Psychoanalysis. He conducts reading seminars internationally focusing on the writings of these two authors. He is the recipient of the 2021 Elisabeth Young-Bruehl Prejudice Award.
